Because by sending email they get to advertise their product; and, like spammers, they think that it doesn't matter how many people you annoy as long as you get one bite. >From a technical point of view, once the marketing department has said "you must send email alerts", it's an extremely hard problem to spot the known-address-faking viruses; and since the companies have the spammer mindset, they probably don't put any particular resource behind that.
