I am in the exact same situation and was looking into other potential
solutions as well.  The other option I found involved modifying
file_column to work with S3.  See: http://geekblog.vodpod.com/?p=30

Unfortunately, both links to code appear to be dead.  How far have you
progressed in your port over to Paperclip?  I would guess this will be
very useful to others in the future as well ;)
