Regarding regular expressions, BRE vs. ERE.

That's a tough one.

As far as the objectives go, the only distinction is whether to put a \ in
front of special characters like ? or not. When considering programming
languages, my impression is that regexes more similar to ERE are far more
common. I also think that fewer escaping makes teaching regular expressions
easier. Therefore I perfectly see Werner's point in using ERE instead of
BRE. We also never escaped the special characters in the objectives
ourselves :) To see how it looks like, I've changed the draft to ERE and
added grep -E. To avoid scaring candidates I've phrased it as 'Regular
Expressions using ., [ ], *, and ? in Extended Regular Expression syntax'.
However, this might have to be subject to further discussion.
