You would have to use Red Hat 7.3 if you wanted to accurately reflect the current LPI objectives. It's getting VERY difficult to run LPIC classes with current distro's, and I'm hoping that LPI gets the new objectives/test in place ASAP!

Meanwhile...

I start my class off on the first day by having students install both Debian AND Fedora in a dual boot configuration. Those two are at the headwaters of the distro pedigree and provide good survey into the dominant package managers. We boot to each throughout the remainder of the week contrasting and comparing differences in topical context.

From the very start of my class I emphasize that Linux is a toolbox of software commodities, and the validated Linux pro is someone who can approach any distro, and quickly be able to work under the hood by identifying common components and function regardless of brand name. You should also instill the fact that while LPIC objectives are not current, 80% of the material is foundational and timeless... using the shell effectively was as important 10 years ago as it will be in the foreseeable future. The pointy-clickity types don't like this, but it is yet another inconvenient truth.

The bottom line is that while some of the latest and greatest distro's provide cool eye candy, the foundations that are taught at this level can be delivered with most any distro.

Hi
Which 2 distributions should I use in my training classes ?
I am training LPI 1.

I need one representative of both the the rpm and the dpkg way of doing
things.

I was going with Fedora 9 and Ubuntu 8.04 - but both are so modern and
differ quite a bit from the LPI objectives.
(E.g. using Upstart in place of init etc)

So which 2 distributions adequately reflect the LPI objectives ?

Regards
Andy
