Hi Bodo,
I think this is similar to the problem that I have seen (and just reported
a day ago).
The reason the first attempt (14:56 job) had a "no response" and the
second (15:07 job) printed OK is this:
Job 1: The paper out occurred AFTER ifhp has sent everything to the
printer's buffer.
Job 2: The paper out occurred WHILE ifhp is sending the job, but
are not done sending yet. I.e., the printer's buffer is full
when the paper out occurred.
In job 1, ifhp has gone into the Do_waitend() sub, and the timeout in
there is a little... :-) In job 2, ifhp has not done sending the file
yet, so it has not gone into Do_waitend(), and the timeout has not
started yet.
If you look carefully, for job 1, the time between the file is completely
sent (14:59) and the "no response" message is exactly 5 minutes, or 300s,
or the default waitend_interval in ifhp.conf.
It needs to be fixed, and I have a suggestion on how to fix it, but I
don't know if the suggestion will break other stuff... :-)

Data completely sent for job 1, at 14:59, and ifhp is in Do_waitend()
loop now.

Error message, exactly 300 seconds later.

Job 2, paper out occurred before ifhp has complete sent the file, so ifhp
has not gone into Do_waitend() loop, so it will not time out.

You fixed the paper out problem, now only ifhp is done sending the file, and
the Do_waitend() loop has a full 300 seconds (waitend_interval) to get
the EOJ from the printer, which it did in...

50 seconds.

For me, the problem is this: I have a small file, but many pages (also
to a HP 5m). The job got sent to the printer in a short time only, and
ifhp goes into Do_waitend(). But the printer takes 10 minutes to print,
way beyond the 300s (waitend_interval). So ifhp gives me "no response",
and LPRng requeue the job. And the exact same thing happen again.
Since I have send_try=300, LPRng will try 300 times before giving up,
and I'll end up with 300 copies of a large document. :-)
