Thank you very much. This really will make LPRng the option for this Xtreme printing!
I downloaded the RPM that was on LPRng�s site... so I simply edited the SPEC file
with the autoconf option you gave me, recompiled, reinstalled the RPM and it is working
like charm.

your first problem is that you installed LPRng with gdbm-support. This
doesn't work at all.
Try reconfiguring and recompiling LPRng-3.7.4 with "configure
--disable-gdbm ...".
Your second problem will disappear if you move the input filter out of
the spool directory.
