We had a brother hl1270 which we gave up on. If you go to the support pages for Brother, you will find a patch to ghostscript which is needed. (I couldn't make it apply cleanly, but maybe I did something strange).
The 'pjl not supported' comes from the fact that the windows drivers wraps the postscript or pcl in pjl. (if you do a write to file - you will see it at top and bottom). You could try and enable pjl in ifhp for the printer (remove the @ from pjl in the section), and I think you should remove any status or pagecount. I don't think the printer likes that.
