Hi Joel,

a) you're right, because the graphical thingees and particularly the
SETUP provided with apsfilter have always worked OK, I have never taken
the time to set up the printers manually. Being lazy by nature, I did
not want to build any "hand made" configurations into my system, that
would be lost or become unworkable with the next system upgrade, so I
relied on supplied system management tools to do the bitsy work.

b) I will work through the web site you mentioned; this is EXACTLY what
I was looking for!!! Many thanks!!

c) The printcap entries don't make sense to me either. That's why I
contacted the mailing list! To me it would be more sensible to get the
individual "filter" printers to print to the "lp@barricade" printer,
which is the remote port to which the printer is physically attached. I
was put off this my the "how to" from plp, which stated that the lpd
daemon had a problem with several printers printing to a single device:
that the device was somehow in an "exclusive" state, and that a funnel
queue was required. That doesn't really make sense to me: this funnel
queue could just as easily have an exclusive lock problem.

d) The entries you have highlighted with comments I will reply to in a
separate mail.

Many thanks!!!

Helmut
