I have tried your suggestion and removed that automatic loading of printers
from the printcap file and created an individual entry, but this hasn't
solved the problem. I still get exactly the same error message.

I have checked it is not the way I have created the share, by using My
Network Neighbourhoood and browsing to that share and this works..

Have you got any NT4.0 Printer Shares?

There appears to be some "invention" with NT authentication with which Samba
can't deal _automatically_. Either that, or Samba "stumbles" over some lprng
configuration diffrences.

Encountered similar pains after upgrading a site from SuSE 7.1 to 8.0 last
week.

When I tell Samba not to load printcap and explicitly declare the printers
required for sharing, it seems to work without a hitch. Try that; just add
one printer definition to smb.conf and see if it's happy.
