Don and Wolfgang, Thanks for all of your help and advice.
I just found and fixed the problem. SOmething changed the "kdmrc" file from "Enable=true" to "Eenable =false". I can only guess that it had something to do with the "buildk" script. I don't think that merely building the kernel would do anything like this. In any event, I'm very glad to have the system working once again. Of course I still need to get the nvidia kernel driver and oss sound working. I'll have to leave these for another day when I have more time "just in case".
