Why do you want to write to the root filesystem ?

Keep in mind that the root filesystem is shared by all
workstations.

Having said that, if you must write to the filesystem, you'll
need to modify the /linuxrc script in the initrd, then build
a new kernel+initrd file.

You can get everything you need in the ltsp_initrd_kit package.
