Well, I've fixed the problem, but I'm still in the dark about what's
going on.

With the new kernel, you have to list tftp clients in /etc/hosts.  If
you do, everything works fine; if you don't, everything slows to a
near-standstill.  So much for my administrationless network... ;-)

I haven't had time to see if adding the clients to the DNS is enough,
although I expect it will be.  Does anyone know how to get dhcpd to
update the DNS whenever it hands out a new address?
