Glenn,
   Are all the machines you are plugging into this switch on the same
network?

This may seem like an odd question, but I accidentally plugged the wrong
LAN cable (attached to a machine on another network) into my Linksys
switch and it totally hosed the switch. All my clients stopped working
until I powered down and repowered the switch.

  Is it possible one of the machines you are plugging in is (even if by
typo) on a different network? A hub will route several different
networks simultaneously, these unmanaged switches don't.
