On that kind of hardware, I would use custom kernels. A slimmed custom kernel only puts a few Kb in ramdisk, there is no need for initrd. And the kernel itself is only 500Kb. In addition you can save some RAM if you use shmfs instead of a ramdisk. I have a minimalistic .config for compiling kernels http://sociologi.cjb.net/ltsp/minimal_1.0.cfg It is for kernel 2.4.9 with the swap over NFS patch.
