A lot of good input so far on ideas for our linux
distro. Here hopefully are some anwsers.

Distro Levels. There will be 4 different distro
areas. Desktop, Laptop, Tradional Server, and A full
terminal distro, that includes whole setup for the
ltsp, includeing useful wizards.

Some of the plans are, easier hardware integration.
Meaning, once hardware for a machine is detected,
unless a change occurs it doesn't have to happen
again, after the first time, the ldap database picks
up what is needed for that terminal.

Not only that but better autentication and security,
telnet will not be included, but will be much more
robust, with features such as kerberos, ssh via ssl,
ldap, ssl, and more.

To be honest it will yet to be seen how well people
will like some of the things we are doing. For
instance. Users will not see the typical linux fhs,
only the admin will. the will see what falls into.

              Home
              Drives
              Programs
              Linux

Which we belive will be much easier for typical
windows users to fall into.

We also offer tighter integration with windows system,
via apps support (not wine, or any of the typical
windows operatives) but the kernel will regularly be
able to handle .exe files. (much faster, trust me),
win4lin support will be integrated in some areas. vnc
or tightvnc, and many of the r*'s will be available...
securly.

Another thing, some old admins, if they so choose will
have to get used to some things, if they use this.
There are several things that have changed with us
thats not normal to linux. Library handling is much
different, the init scrits are not sysv nor bsd style,
but much easier to admin, and if you want to start a
new service, no more init writing, just create a new
symlink. starting and stoping services is childs
play, just type "start symlinkname" and "stop
symlinkname".

Of course this means incomatibilites, however we plan
on supporting a great deal of apps, and if you have
some that you really need that isn't included, please
say so, well get it changed over very quickly.

Please list all the progs you all use, majorly so we
can have them already done when everything is finished
up.

Programs. One thing were looking for is not a big
Application distro like mandrake. We don't want
10,000 apps, right out of the box. but as said
before, if you want a certain app, say something.

The deskop, i won't be saying a lot about what we have
added and will be added to the deskop. So far the
plan is one highly integrated desktop, but if you so
choose, it can be changed. There are some things that
probably won't be like there, like the user not being
able to select between muliple desktops. However, we
belive that, the admin should have choice of the
desktop, and not leave everything bloated.

A linux network neighborhod is included, (file sharing
between user home) as well as easier viewing of
"network drives". Some of these things sound a bit
"micro-ish" however we have made some drastic
changes, that will help usability, large speed-up's
and a nicer and cleaner interface (little eyecandy
included.

Latter on some of our plans are better image
integration handeling in programs, (no more having
images lying about), huge speedup. Better
configuration setup... no more editing of text files,
among other things.

Im sure that i have forgotten some things that are
functional or planned, and will get back to that
later. Please once again, if any ideas or questions
to why we are doing some of these things, please drop
me a line.

Lastly, many projects that we have seen are planning
stage, i wan't to assure you, planning is always
happening, however, much of the ground level is
already completed.

Well hope this answered some things. Hope you all
will try our linux "ArtimisOS" in the future.
