I would go to some length to avoid local apps, and if it also involved
locally stored data then perhaps LTSP is not a good solution. LTSP is
simple because the terminals only have to do one thing: X windows. If
you want local apps accessing locally stored data, then why implement
it via LTSP?

Let the clients boot from local harddisk and find a
reasonable balance between local apps and remote apps via the X
windows setup. (Configure the windowmanager to execute some
applications locally and other applications remotely)

Or, if you have over-powered clients, you could try a mosix setup
instead. (And store the data on the server instead).
