While it may generally be true that the distributions for z and iseries
(for that matter) may not have all the most interesting and latest x
features as x86, I think using ltsp on them is viable for consoles and
lightweight clients.  I've used ltsp on iseries and can run gnome, kde, etc
just like x86.  My two cents...

On a previous discussion, someone pointed me that using a zseries server as
an ltsp server is
not interresting as these machines are fast for computaionnal problems and
bad as X servers.
