I am not an expert (yet), but this is what I did just now.  I'm running RedHat 
7.3 if it makes any difference.

Do this as root.

1.  Create the ICEwm script file:

touch /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/ICEwm

2.  Make it executable to all, writeable only by root:

chmod 755 /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/ICEwm

3.  Open it with your favorite editor, and put the following lines in it:

#!/bin/bash

exec /usr/X11R6/bin/icewm

4.  Save it, and you're done!
