I have a related problem. I am using PXE boot. With stock modules, I
can boot fine. If I boot the client from it's own Hdd, I can mount the
NFS root fs, but with custom kernel, no initrd,
during linux kernel boot, I get to

IP Protocols.....
IP: routing cache
TCP: Hash tables....
Net4: Uinx domain sockets
request_module[block-major-1]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device "192.168.0.254:/tftpboot/pax1" or 01:92
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic.........

192.168.0.254 is the server.
/tftpboot/pax1 is the rfs I need to mount.
From the server, there appears to be no attampt to mount any rfs.
