Peter,

You might try using the older XFree86 3.3.6 S3V Xserver.

You would need the ltsp_x336_s3v package, and set

    XSERVER = XF86_S3V

in the lts.conf file.

My hunch is there are still bugs in the 4.x version of the s3 virge
driver.
