Steve,
There are a number of ways to set colors in xterm.
1) Command line args when invoking xterm, like this:
xterm -bg blue -fg white
2) Entries in the app-defaults file.
Take a look at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.
Lots of configuration entries there.
3) ~/.Xdefaults
I've got entries like this:
xterm*background: steelblue4
xterm*foreground: wheat
Try some of that, and see what happens.
