Many thanks!

Idea 1 worked but isn't very convenient

Idea 2 worked by changing VT100*foreground: grey90
                 to       VT100*foreground: white

Idea 3 didn't seem to work at all but who cares

Idea 2 it is 

It also sorted mc & mutt so I am away now.
