Try KDM instead. GDM seems not properly to exit sessions, so they stay open somewhere and the limits get reached after several logins/logouts. Was on the list these days, so just give KDM a try. Konfiguration is easy too as there is a kontrol center applet for that.

Alternatively if you particularly like GDM (like me), you can just put:
00 04 * * * reboot
in your crontab. Works for me here, and we never have any problems with anything. Zombie processes get killed, and all the other nastiness associated with users logging in and out all the time.
