| Svein Erik,
| VNC will allow you to do this.

You will want to use either xf4vnc (xf4vnc.sf.net) or vnc-X-session or
vncquick (www.pcxperience.org).

| VNC has the added advantage of allowing a user to sign out without
| ending a session, so programs can continue to run. This can cause its
| own problems, however.

Only if you do not use VNC as your actual X session or run everything in
your VNC session and not run anything on your local X session.

| VNC has a few inconveniences, though.
|
| 1. Programs cannot move from one Xdisplay to another, so your users will
| need to either a) run all of their programs on the Xvnc display or b)
| restart the problem program on the Xvnc display when they need help.
|
| 2. You won't be able to see the student's cursor, and he won't be able
| to see yours. You will see the results of each other's mouse movements.

This is the case with the defaults with certain versions of
vncveiwer/server. If you are using TightVNC, there are options to
re-enable the display and tracking of the mouse cursor.
