I never tried to login as a clean user before I fixed this problem, but
it could have been caused by previous xmodmap settings I had for these
users, that I set up years ago to basically lock the numeric keypad to
numeric keys and ignore the numlock key.  I wonder if it was these
xmodmap settings that caused the symptoms to arise.  The easiest way to
check would be to login as root, since usually root is a clean user
outside of the old /home tree, and would have no xmodmap settings, but I
didn't think of that before I fixed the problem.  Try logging in as root
to see if the problem goes away.  If it does, then you can check to see
if there is a .Xmodmap file in the user's home dir.  If they don't need
these settings, you can avoid the problem altogether and remove
.Xmodmap.

What if you don't have an excisting V3 install ?? (like me...)


Also, Anyone know of a broblem where one key on the keyboard seems not 
to work... I have this problem with keypad number 2.
