To help in your understanding:
Anything that is displayed on your workstations' monitors (not
including the local app stuff of course) is really running on the
server. This includes the "shutdown" button....
So you should really disable the shutdown. This is done for example in
the kdmrc file, there's an option to only allow local shutdown (by
persons directly sitting in front of the server).

What you have been doing up to know was shutting down the server.
The workstations need no shutdown, just turn them off. That's fine.
They don't use the harddrive in the workstations (except in some
specail local apps setups, but you would know if you had something
like that, and then you already knew was I was telling you above) - so
no danger in just flipping the main power switch on them. However,
don't do this on the server!

There has been some KDM patch to allow shutting down terminals from
the login window, like using the auto-power-off feature modern
mainboards & power supplies offer, but this has never become
"official", so the general configuration tip is to totally disable
shutting down from remote.
You most probably are using KDE, so you should even be able to
configure that from the Kontrol center -> login manager.

Hope this helps to shed some light,

best regards,
 Anselm
