It's not normal, but I have seen it happen on some workstations.
I've noticed most/all of my client boxes do that. I can't remember the details, but something around there fails (pivotroot?), it tries again and then works fine. As they end up working, I haven't really looked at it much.
New kernel sounds interesting!
