Nearly, but beware:

On my RedHat9 system an executable .xsession in the home directory will
run the stuff.

On my SuSE 9.1 test an excutable .xsession works if you choose the gdm session
to be [default]. If you choose [icewm] and you have a .xsession the you get the
cute [your session lasted less than 10 secs ... ] message.

The easiest is to select session to be [default] and have a .xsession eg

xset dpms 500 600 700
icewmbg &
icewm

Mandrake could be similar to either, or different.
