Hi folks,

Yesterday I tested 4.1 for the first time. Up to now, there is ltsp 3 running on my server. I'd just like to give you something to discuss on by mentioning some of the experiences I made. And of course, there are some questions, too :-)

There are a few PIIs with a 100 MBit NIC, here everything just ran out of the box with the lts.conf defaults, good speed and so on. After that first test, I copied the configs from ltsp3 for a test with the other clients.

With those machines on 10 MBit NICs I found connections slowing down considerably. Some machines even didn't make it up to the XDM login after 15 minutes or so. There were dozens of NFS-not-responding messages. Is it possible that 4.1 produces so much more network load?

With two clients, X wouldn't run anymore, there seems to be some major change in some of the servers. I didn't have enough time to try everything, but on ltsp3 both machines are running happily in Auto mode. Is there such a big difference in X.org servers?

My overall impression was that migration from version 3 to 4.1 is rather easy with respect to configuration. The new config tools are really great, and I like the package manager.

But it won't be that easy to set up and fine-tune the whole bunch of clients. I have a rather heterogeneous collection of old machines here, and almost every client needs its own special configs. It seems that I cannot just take over everything from the old version, especially with regard to X servers.

Does this match with your observations?

Rolf
