If I understand the question correctly, you want to install the ltsp
kernel to the thin clients without having to copy it over the network
each time the client boots?
If this is what you want, you can put the ltsp kernel on the a hard
drive in the compaq deskpros and boot it from there. This will reduce
the load on your network at boot time for the thin clients but you do
lose some of the advantages of a thin client with this configuration.
I.e.. your "Thin Client" now has to have hard drive.

How about about knoppix like cd to boot & login to the server....
same advantage but no hard disk & ... I think.. all the advantages
of the thin-client except that now you have to have a CDROM...
