Can anyone point me to a good document that elucidates how sound should work in this client/server model?

Some of the questions I need answered are:

Should /dev/dsp* or /dev/sound/* entries exist on the server, the client, or both? Should esd (or whatever sound daemon) be running on the server, the client, or both? In the wiki article on local apps, why does it say that sound works better when apps are run locally?

Thanks much,
