That would indicate problems with fuse, I'd think.

OK, so:

What version of kernel?
where did you install the libs?
Have you tried the example fuse filesystem?
Have you tried sshfs?
What's the permissions on the /dev/fuse?
Have you added the users to the fuse group?

etc.
