If he's getting X starting with a black screen, he's WAY past any NFS problems. This is likely caused by the video card over-driving the monitor. This calls for some tweaks to the X_HORZSYNC and X_VERTREFRESH in lts.conf. Also, he should try setting SCREEN_01 = startx in the [Default] section. It sounds like the terminal doesn't know it's own hostname.
