On a related note (of interest only, not a contradiction):

In my limited experience, ltsp works just fine without wsxxx in the 
$DISPLAY if it's still correct; it seems it depends on the contents of the 
/etc/hosts file, which depends on the options chosen when running the 
ltspcfg tool. Right now I've removed this line (and its brothers):

192.168.1.79            ws079.ltsp      ws079

and what I get is ws079 for hostname on the terminal, and on the server:

~$ echo $DISPLAY
192.168.1.79:0

The local USB port still gets used correctly (and a working icon for it 
shows up on the desktop) when I insert a USB key-drive.
