All of which I've done and is a pain.
The network bootrom does NOT need to be on the NW card. I used a small board 
that plugged into the isa bus to have the network boot rom.
The bottom line:
You need to have a storage space to place boot info
Choose the cheapest way of getting that
the DOCs may be the cheapest, but you will need a programmer card

DOC have lots of info on their site
