It's a decent solution when it's rolled into the pxe boot loader.  In
that case it's rolled directly into the network boot, which means you
never have to deal with it on local media.  However, it's not really a
"new" thing.  For instance, I have roughly 100 thin clients and
another 100 thick clients in my environment and they're all set to
boot from pxe.  The thin clients pxe boot to either ltsp or one of the
other environments I have.  The thick clients have a boot loader that
allows a thick client to be reimaged by the bartpe imaging environment
I built for the xp workstations, or it defaults to just chain booting
to the hard disk, in which case xp loads.

Chain booting has been available in grub for a long time.  Rolling it
into syslinux is relatively new, and that's a pretty powerful feature.
