As far as I know, ESD has too much latency and we need to use pulseaudio. However, there is a long standing bug which prevents softphones from working with PA: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2601 On the plus side, I'm glad to hear that somebody had success with twinkle and/or kphone.
