Hi,

We're having a strange issue with an LTSP install. The install
consists of an LTSP server (v3.1.0) running on RedHat Enterprise 3 with
approximately 10 diskless workstations accessing a GNOME desktop. This
install has been in production for about 3 years and we've only seen
this issue appear in the past week or so.

Recently, it was discovered that when a user logs off one of the
diskless workstations, the console session (default graphical login) on
the server gets broken. By that I mean that the "/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"
socket and "/tmp/.X0-lock" file are removed from the LTPS server and
the console session is effectively neutered since we can't launch any
new windows. The session appears functional -- you can still move the
mouse, access menus, etc. but you can't launch any applications. If
you logoff or restart w/ CTRL+ALT+BKSP, the socket & lock files are
re-created and all is well until another client system logs off.

I've repeatedly tested this and it happens on logoff from any diskless
workstation with any user account. I'm at a loss to explain why this
is happening at all, nevermind why it has suddenly become a problem.
We did perform an update of several packages on the server recently to
bring it up to RHEL3 Update 8. However I cannot determine what is
allowing the client sessions to affect the console session. Any
suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
