I had a chance to test the new LTSP 5.0 (built on Ubuntu 7.04) and here
are things I need to comment:
1. Performance (LTSP 5.0 slower than 4.2) - it was mentioned here
previously, so nothing more to say. Will be hopefully fixed in
Ubuntu 7.10
2. No keyboard when running SCREEN_01 = startx. I have found out it
clashes with ubuntu login dialog - needs to be fixed
3. xorg.conf built procedure is much less transparent than before.
For example by default lots of weird wacom devices are configured.
It probably does not make a sense for most thin clients.
4. Most thin clients are Via based - matter of fact. The X server now
employs AIGLX to accelerate GL operations even on remote desktops
(like thin clients). Good. Unfortunately kernel/X driver for Via
chipsets seems to me broken enough to make this cool feature
useless (even a normal GL screensaver is enough to crash X). The
only feasible solution is to disable DRI at the moment and leave
all GL operations to be handled by (slow, but working) Mesa
renderer. Unfortunately I do not know how to do it as the X config
file built process is so complicated. It would be nice to have
this somehow documented at least so admin has better control over
the resulting xorg.conf.
5. In LTSP 4.2, there was a mechanism to limit X to some amount of
RAM, avoiding crashing thin client when some buggy/leaking X
clients were launched. I did not notice this feature in LTSP 5.0 -
pity.
I understand some of this could be solved by using LDM over XDM, but,
taking XDM is still a lot faster than encrypted ssh tunnel, we need to
continue support of classical XDM login.
