There's no such group in /etc/group on the server.

Do you mean on the client?  There's those groups on the client, but
isn't client running as root?


What file/device does the user need access to that I should check
permissions on?

Again, I can use the pulse utility to control the volume so, I'm not
sure it a permission issue.
