Unless YOU changed the welcome message in gdm, gdm does NOT know WHAT your 
hostname is just that you are to use it. Look at 'Welcome' in /etc/gdm/stuff

So the bit about hostname is almost certainly what you have got wrong!
And as far as this is concerned, do not touch gdm config

Also since you 'cloned' your server, maybe your clients ARE getting served by 
serverA when you think that they are being served by serverB and
EG a client can completely be served by B, yet still display the login on A !!
