There aren't any plans to update anything in LTSP 4.2, according to the
developers. That's not to say that a user hasn't done what you're asking, but
the developers are concentrating on LTSP 5. One of the main reasons for that
is that kernel updates get handled by the parent distribution, which allows the
LTSP developers more time to work on LTSP-specific items like local devices,
etc.
There is an email list for the K12LTSP distribution -- you might want to try
asking your question there. That is CentOS with LTSP 4.2. The people over
there are very helpful and have a lot of experience with LTSP 4.2.
You can run LTSP 5 and LTSP 4.2 on the same machine (with some limitations). I
did that for a while. It would probably solve your problem (boot your new thin
client via LTSP 5). You will need to switch to a newer distribution, though.
Specifically one that supports LTSP 5. The latest Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora
do, as well as some other distros which I can't think of off the top of my head.
Fedora Core 5 has reached end of life, so there are no more security updates.
You should consider updating that regardless of what you decide to do with LTSP.
