Hmm, that's rather weird. I have a very similar known bug for the thin client mode: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ldm/+bug/987726 But the cause of this one is assumed to be a failure in unity_support_test to detect 16bit color mode and fallback to 2d (as compiz doesn't support 16bit). In your case, as you're running your machine as a fat client, X is supposed to be in 24bit mode which shouldn't hit that particular bug. Can you check if X was called with a config file and if it was, what that config file contains? I'd like to ensure we don't end up starting fat clients in 16bit mode... I'm currently 7000km away from my LTSP test setup, but hope to have some time to investigate later this week or when I get back from the Developer Summit mid-May. > .xsession-errors contents can be seen at > http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=J44kex4B (that's the very first login > attempt on a brand new user account, I get the same symptoms on > pre-existing accounts.) > > Here's the output from pstree at this point[1]: > http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=5Uq9shdm > > Unity runs fine if I boot this same machine from a 12.04 Live USB > key (and "/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p" outputs all "yes" > values.) I also tested on a second Unity-supported machine (newer > model) and got the same results. I added these to the bug anyway, in case that helps later on. > > * Switching sessions to unity-2d (aka "Ubuntu 2D"), Unity 2D > loads. > > It works fine on new accounts, on any pre-existing account I found > I needed to delete the "~/.local/share/zeitgeist" directory before > the Launcher would work at all (search results were always empty > for all types of search, so you couldn't launch anything!) Indeed sounds like a zeitgeist bug, might be worth looking for it/reporting it on Launchpad if you have some time. > * There's a GNOME session option but it just pops up with "Failed > to load session 'gnome'". That session indeed won't work, I think the reason why it shows up at all is a bug in ldminfod that doesn't understand "hidden=true" as a property in /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop I opened a bug about it so we get that fixed soon and pushed as an update to 12.04: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ldm/+bug/991745 > Any other tips? Unity-2d is supported for both fat and thin clients, Unity-3d should be working for fat clients but apparently isn't. > > Thanks for any/all help, > > Angus - -- Stéphane Graber Ubuntu developer http://www.ubuntu.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBCgAGBQJPnkmKAAoJEMY4l01keS1n4TkP/3CDZMR2llkLTdHvK74xBr+y bjJvElVXU1Je5McRcvRkLZNoxZdH9B70YvooYSSimDAD++CAwpatpe5d48hNKr5s Es6JzTKQeM51X/86Saj1sUPIsWNUbFMJ2ry4aJehumH2ox+tJgWXWEIPhp6zrodv OUb9s0SQxKYssSXtT3RPxqoBFH8/QQS4CrCbs46PbWgZscK5AQfyWGLaFBUS1BF0 Yp7lVa1+vAw2UMuUjhw4z61Z2hpxA/St3e+RrsNj3LGqpbyBwCp+ugIuFPs+NtXU RNFveQV4XrSn6G8GEfrTS1yh/V/IWbtiQ2gh4UTiBcFhRNQ3nfQ3cfqcwD/uy1cB 0cZG7gY9C5j4vaYqgIkR3VFRLkWdA+/0SGo9anIkVpK4ePmU/9PuYgSam0/5vtj0 zNC/QQsjFDmvzJlDRE0c+ERSwK63wMqQsy48jAeTON0NlpJzf95JaV21NPeHXk3l SB705awIo/I3dalgTLna1RVUVm0UPC2dK578hSl1vjJA9uWoN4MBiNt5UZYUjnPf EtYIkxf2hpxFNDr8Bu5T++1ee/7QsyNpEeWRdxO/2jMvS/bnpGCrX+1IoLrzChH6 G0aVym2x/Rup3PA3SaQBdGIq9Rjm9p4sIezmTbBzPgQSSjy1PZ617glxRhIX3atc 2oQsEtJBEX5ccFOTxT/9 =PLLv -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
