BTW if a user adds fonts, how does luaotfload detect this and re-index?
The three most common circumstances would be

a. additional system fonts installed by a system's font installer

b. additional fonts from CTAN that were not installed by TeX Live (are there any?)

c. additional fonts installed by adding them to ~/texmf/fonts/opentype or ~/texmf/fonts/truetype
