The only thing I can think of is that somehow the value of $TEXMF did
not include ~/texmf, but I cannot see how that could happen.
I will have another opportunity to test this with another laptop some
time next month.
BTW if a user adds fonts, how does luaotfload detect this and re-index?
The three most common circumstances would be
a. additional system fonts installed by a system's font installer
b. additional fonts from CTAN that were not installed by TeX Live (are
there any?)
c. additional fonts installed by adding them to ~/texmf/fonts/opentype
or ~/texmf/fonts/truetype
