Has anyone on Windows experimented with the branch? I think it's complete 
enough to merge. But I wonder if instead of VER it should be using the 
packaged UNAME.EXE to get the system version. In particular, VER gives a 
different result under WINE. The output of UNAME.EXE is "2.XXX" where XXX is 
the actual Windows version. Actually, `uname -rv` gives me "2.5.1 2600" under 
WINE 1.5.6. 

I also am not checking for architecture in the platform override. Does anyone 
want that?
