My WinTV card has an NTSC analog RCA input that the linux driver sees as a separate input. I don't know if it actually modulates to RF then digitizes, but I would hope not (why would it?).

Yes, those two cards has RCA for NTSC input, I don't know much about WinTV card, looks like WinTV card have to go to a process of RF demodulation where your video have to RF modulated to channel 3/4 for it's input. Here's the different of the two, using NTSC input: NTSC = 0-4.5Mhz @ 1 volt peek to peek, you need an audio card for audio capturing. RF card, don't know if it still need to use the audio card, but with the extra stages, noise might be added during the modulation(Video used AM and Audio used FM) and demodulation process. In another term, either you have the video out and audio out of your VCR connected directly to the TV, much cleaner signal, or connected with RF cable using channel 3 on your TV to watch the video from your VCR. Make your pick.

So the Dazzle has problems eh? cool, thanks for the info..the cards that
you recommended have RCA inputs?Do you know how these cards compare to the
WinTV one by any chance?

Thanks,

Don't get the Dazzle, it has alot of problems and not sure if it works
with Linux, get the LML33 or a cheaper card from Pinnacle - DC10Plus.
LML33 can do 720x480(dvd), DC10Plus can do 640x480. Since video tape
is a little lower then 382x288, you can't tell the difference with
DC10Plus @ 320x240, you can also push the edited video back to your
video tape. What ever you are picking up, make sure they are using
zoran chipset, zr36067/saa7110/adv7175, becasue it has Video4Linux
support, I have done video capture with lavrec or with MainActor, you
can watch the video with xawtv also. If you want to know how to make
your video into (S)VCD that can play on your DVD player, I can show
you the process, it's not that hard.

check this out first.

hope that helps
btw, I have a DC10Plus for a few years, been working fine.
