Aloha, I am doing some research into using Linux on the desktop for a new company and I have a couple questions. This will be for a company which most of the employees will have backgrounds with OS X and some with Irix. Since this is a new company and I like Linux so much, I want to find out about the feasibility of using Linux on the desktop from the begining.
as for applications, I am thinking of using: Codeweavers and MS Office Star Office Ximian Evolution That should cover the majority of what we will need on desktops. What are everyones experiences with these compared to the Windows and Mac counterparts. The big question is interoperability with other companies. Has anyone here used Ximian Red Carpet (Enterprise) or Red Hat Enterprise Network with the Software Delivery Module. What distribution do people think would be best for the desktop? I am leaning towards Debian with Ximian Red Carpet Enterprise. The problem then becomes no company for support. There will be a full time sysadmin for the Irix and OS X systems. That person should be able to take care of the Linux systems, but being able to call tech support is useful. The majority of the systems at this company will be Macs, so we are planning an all Mac enviorment with Office X right now, which I am not opposed to, but it is so much more expensive than a Windows desktop solution and I really want a Linux solution. Thanks for your input, Dusty
