Hi Mark, I'm sure the others will scream at me, but as 14.04 desktop is over sized, it will not fit on a CD. Alternate obviously does not have LiveCD option.... However..... have a try of the 12.04 lubuntu desktop PPC, which should have the ability to boot as LiveCD and have the ability to invoke LVM stuff.
head over to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/PreviousReleases#A12.04 and see if it works for you. If that link is slow / not working, then feel free to use my mirror which for 12.04 is at http://phillw.net/isos/lubuntu/precise/ I'm not a PPC person, but I do know lubuntu is your refuge and I will do what ever I can to help out.
