Hi Israel,

I will try launching the "nm-applet" to resolve the issue of not seeing the
network indicator and who knows maybe I will then be able to get a connection
with Lubuntu 14.4.

Do you think this is also related to connectivity or just the fact that i don't
see the network indicator. With the other Ubuntu derivatives (13.10 and up) I
see the network indicator and can choose my network but can't connect.

I will go through everything you mentioned.

Thank you once again for your help

Hi Marc,
I just remembered
>From this page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes/Lubuntu

Network indicator on the panel may not start at login. You can start it
manually by launching "nm-applet" in a terminal. Some others autostarted
applications may also be affected (such as automatic updates). See
1308348<https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308348> for the details and the ETA
for the fix. To turn on nm-applet in autostart, follow these
instructions<http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/fix-lubuntu-1404-network-manager.html>
It may need two reboots to fully work.

But, you are saying you can try installing ANY derivative of Ubuntu 14.04 and
have this issue? I have also tried, and installed Xubuntu and Ubuntu 14.04
also and have only had this issue in Lubuntu.

It is always a good idea to read the release notes, for issues like this one.
Also, it is a good idea to make sure you have the full image, by checking the
md5sum.
I usually install zsync. That way if my md5sum is off I can just zsync the
file and it will fix it, without having to re-download everything.

Hi Israel and Andre,

The connectivity issue occurs on all of our laptops no matter what make or
model. In general at our school board the older laptops and netbooks we are
converting are Toshiba Tecra A9, A10 and A11's. The Netbooks are NB 200's,
250's and 350's. We also have Dell laptops and HP laptops in smaller numbers.

In every case, If I install any derivative of ubuntu based on 12.04 LTS I am
able to see my school boards network and then put in the WPA2 enterprise
configuration with user credentials and I get a connection right away.

If I install any derivative of ubuntu that is newer than 12.04 I can sometimes
see our network but when I try connecting, it just loops and continues to ask
for the username and password for the network.

Yesterday I installed Lubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba Tecra A9. After the
installation I see the little WIFI icon in the lower left hand corner and i am
able to connect to the network. I then installed Lubuntu 14.4 and then did not
see the WIFI icon at the lower right hand side.

I am honestly no expert at this but it does not seem to be a hardware issue
since the same problem occurs no matter what machine we are using. Would it
still be helpful to send you the network controller info?

Hi Marc,
I agree with Andre that we need to know more about the hardware.
This:

lspci |grep [nN]et

Should display all your network controllers. Please report back what ones you
are having issues with!

Good evening Marc,

Alongside asking here, you can try in the Ubuntu Networking Forum

http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336

Some very knowledgeable people might be able to help you there.

Good luck :-)

Best regards
Nio (alias sudodus at the Ubuntu Forums)
