Hi Linda,
I doubled checked the usb and the check5sums I also tried
booting from a Ubuntu 10 DVD and an Ubuntu 6.06 CD The CD
gave you the install or try menu and simply returned to the
menu. Then I downloaded Knoppix to a DVD, a CD and a usb
flash drive. Although the bios gives you the choice to boot
from the cd/dvd drive it only seems to actually boot from a
cd in the drive. It also gives you the choice to boot from
a usb flash drive but it also does not seem to actually
work. Good news is that the newest version of knoppix that
will fit on a cd will boot and run as a live install. So
since the computer has a working Windows XP install I'm
thinking my next step is to try UNetbootin and install from
the hard drive. Should I try for lubuntu with this or should
I switch to a different distribution for the first attempt
since I have had no luck with even old versions of unbuntu
working from a live CD?
Thanks
Linda

------------------------------
1. Download Lubuntu [http://lubuntu.net/]
2. Download UNetbootin [http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/] and allow
executing as a program
3. Insert a 4 GB or larger USB flash drive
4. Format (or re-format) the USB flash drive as FAT / FAT32.
5. Double-click UNetbootin and enter your password.
6. Select the Diskimage radio button and click the [ ... ] button.
7. Navigate to and choose the lubuntu iso you downloaded
UNetbootin will extract the iso (generate a syslinux config file) and
make the USB flash drive bootable on any computer that supports booting
from USB.
8. When duplication is complete; choose Exit instead of Reboot Now
unless you are planning to install Lubuntu on the same computer
9. Safely remove the USB flash drive (again, unless you will be
installing on the same computer) and wait 2-3 seconds before physically
removing it.
Mac OS X: click and drag the icon of the USB flash drive toward the
trash (the trash icon will become an eject symbol) and drop. The flash
drive icon will disappear from the Mac desktop.
Windows: right-click the USB drive icon in My Computer (or the USB flash
drive icon in your System Tray) and choose "Safely Remove Hardware."
U/X/Lubuntu: right-click the icon of the USB drive and choose "Unmount,"
"Safely Remove Drive," or "Eject Removable Media
10. Insert the USB flash drive in an open USB port on the HP (while the
computer is off).
Note: HP Pavilion desktops of this era can be pretty finicky about how
it receives the signal to enter the Boot Menu or the BIOS. If you have
an extra (or can borrow one, or purchase one) PS/2 keyboard, use it.
11a. The super easy way to tell the machine to boot from the USB Flash
Drive is to tap the ESC key. This will get you into the Boot menu by
itself. You should see the USB Flash Drive listed. If you don't
recognize the name, then choose it by process of elimination. The hard
disk drive will likely be a bunch of letters and numbers. A CD/DVD drive
will have one of those in the name and what's left should be your USB
flash drive. Use the arrow keys to move the USB flash drive, enter to
select it to boot with.
11b. The other way is to enter the BIOS by tapping F10. Arrow right to
the boot menu, arrow down to the Boot Device Priority, tap the ENTER key
to select it. Choose 1st Boot Device (Arrow down if neccessary) and tap
ENTER. Arrow up or down to the Hard Drive Group and tap ENTER. Arrow
down to HDD Group Bboot Priority, Tap ENTER and put the USB Flash Drive
above or on top of the Hard Disk Drive by arrowing to it and using the +
or - keys. Your USB flash drive should now be listed next to 1st Drive.
Tap F10 to save and ENTER to select Yes to save configuration and exit now.
12. Install Lubuntu
13. Remove the USB flash drive from the computer when you see the
Lubuntu against a black background./
